I’m an engineer by education, a business consultant for much of my career and now a glass artist for pleasure and fulfilment.
As I said on the Home page, although a lot of my work in the UK and China was related to manufacturing, my consulting activities offered few opportunities to get my hands dirty and make things, yet making things is what I have always loved to do.
A couple of periods of ill health gave me time for reflection and prompted me to re-evaluate my priorities. As a result I set up a small ‘warm glass’ studio to enable me to fuse, cast and flame-work glass.
I have had the privilege of learning from some highly talented glass artists and I have practiced and developed the skills they taught me.
I love to experiment and try new things; the engineer in me enjoys the technical challenges of working with new techniques and materials, and the artist in me is always exploring new ways of using glass to create different forms and shapes and to enhance the natural shapes and textures within the glass itself.
I design and make my own coloured and patterned glass, using a variety of techniques, to give the widest possible pallet of colours, shapes and textures.
I mostly produce fused glass art pieces, particularly birds and the natural world as I find that glass lends itself very well to capturing their colours and textures, whether natural or with an artistic twist to the colours and patterns. This is my focus for the larger art events that I am privileged to exhibit at.
However, when time permits I do enjoy making a few items of tableware, ornaments and jewellery, especially as that's how I started in glass.
Helen and I exhibit my work at various art shows around East Anglia and the home counties. We enjoy meeting people who want to know more about glass art and we always come away from shows with new ideas about what to make next. It’s lovely to be able to talk to people who have an interest and enthusiasm for hand-made art and craft and, of course, if we can show them something they want to buy it’s the icing on the cake!
